Fly Fishing 101 – Gear & Rod Setup Essentials

Location: River People Guides Fly Shop, Bragg Creek

Format: In-classroom instruction

Fly Fishing 101 is a beginner-focused classroom course designed to remove the confusion around fly fishing gear and help you confidently set up your rod the right way from day one.

Duration: 2hrs

When: Every Tuesday @ 5:30pm

Where: River People Guides Fly Shop

Cost: $50

This course breaks down all the essential equipment—rods, reels, fly lines, leaders, tippet, flies, and accessories—and explains what each piece does, why it matters, and how to choose the right setup for Alberta rivers and trout fishing. We focus on practical, real-world knowledge so you’re not just buying gear, but actually understanding it.

You’ll learn how to properly assemble and rig a fly rod, including fly line orientation, leader and tippet selection, knot basics, and common setup mistakes to avoid. We also cover different rod actions, line weights, and reel types so you can make informed decisions whether you’re purchasing your first setup or dialing in an existing one.

By the end of Fly Fishing 101, you’ll:

  • Understand all core fly fishing gear and terminology
  • Know how to correctly set up a fly rod from reel to fly
  • Feel confident walking into a fly shop (or onto the river) knowing what you need and why
  • Be prepared for on-water instruction, casting clinics, or guided trips

This course is ideal for first-time anglers, those transitioning from spin fishing, or anyone who wants a stronger foundation before hitting the river.

No prior fly fishing experience required.
